I am riding for two people in my family that have passed away recently from cancer in 2023
My mom, Diana Lutz passed away March 8th. If you followed my Pedal the Cause rides the last couple of years, you will know that my mom was the strongest person I know and always had a positive attitude on life even with her disease. My mom fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. For the most part, she had mostly good days except for the last 4 months of the disease.
The second person I am riding for is my cousin Dan Gerecht who passed away May 2nd. . He was recently diagnosed with stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer in his lungs, which spread to some lymph nodes. Although he has never smoked, rode his bike about 3/5 times a week for long distances and was healthy - cancer doesn’t care. A week before Dan was about to start his fight with chemo, he passed away.
I recently had a chance to visit the two labs at Washington University Medical School and was extremely impressed with the numerous research studies going on to pinpoint cancer cells and to personalize medicines for each type of cancer cell specific to the person with those cells. I am so happy that all of our money raised goes directly toward research. All administrative costs of the bike ride are paid for by corporate donations.
