At the beginning of April 2023, I was devastated to learn the news that I had breast cancer. I was only 44 years old, in good health, and I had only recently learned that I was high risk. Although I was never concerned about losing my life since my tumor was found early, I had high hopes for many other things to happen last year. One of the most anxiety producing times was finding out what my year would look like... waiting for more information and a treatment plan. I ended up having 4 surgeries in one year due to the breast cancer, other female issues, and a cancer-related genetic mutation. I also had chemotherapy and lost all my hair and have had 5 hairstyles in one year. These were some of the challenging parts of my cancer journey.
After going through intensive treatment through Siteman last year, I am doing a lot better and have no evidence of active cancer! This upcoming October 2nd marks my one-year anniversary of my last chemo treatment! The long-term medication and ongoing monitoring I continue doing are not a walk in the park, but I am so glad I have the privilege to do all this through Siteman. Not only are the staff kind and comforting, but my oncologist has a great bedside manner, is an expert in her field and has done some of the research herself!
Through Siteman, I get to participate in 2 nationally funded research studies that follow how I am doing after treatment with the purpose of helping other breast cancer patients in the future.
